Would you go back to school?

If money were no object, if time was no issue, would you go back to school?

If you got the approval from your spouse and your kids, if you got the approval from your employer, if you got the approval from your bank, if you could wind the clock back or if you had a time machine or if you had a ripcord you could pull at anytime to return to your current life, would you go back to school and would you choose different subjects?

If you could take all the ‘ifs’ out, would you go back to school and what would you study?

  2. I loved school too! I think I was pretty savvy really in choosing the subjects I did though…although they might not have seemed it at the time, but they formed the foundation of where my *cough* career has gone. In my final year, I took Classical Studies, English, German, Calculus, (oh my gosh! I can’t remember the last subject…was it Chemistry?!?!?!0

Classical Studies hasn’t exactly shaped by career path, but it’s helped with my understanding of the history of places I’ve travelled to (Italy, Greece, Turkey etc) and appreciation of how our society operates today (democracy, architecture etc).

German was most useful as a traveller: reading menus, asking for directions, ordering bier at Oktoberfest!

English certainly helps…I’ve “accidentally” followed a career in publishing, marketing, communications, and websites (although the latter is more design & programming which is new to my repertoire).

The last two subjects (Calculus and Chemistry), in hindsight I would swap for Design/Art and Accounting/Economics. My favourite part of my current job (webmaster) is making my websites look pretty and understanding how users thinking when looking for content. As my career as fallen in the “business” category, (as opposed to teaching/medicine/sport/science), I could have done with some foundation courses on book keeping – especially if I ever want to go freelancing or start my own business.

If I went back to University, however, I’d probably do a Design degree as opposed to the BA in Classical Studies that I did… I loved what I did and it suited me at the time, but 10 years on, it’s design that I love…I love to create (you should see my knitting! No boring scarfs from me!).
