Today was the day, it was that day. That day I’ve been waiting for, that day when I had the time and interest to attack. To attack the wardrobe, to attack the house, to attack anything I had that I thought I needed but if I was really honest with myself, I actually never use.
We’ve all done it before, we call it the spring clean, the sorting of our personal belongings to get rid of stuff we no longer need. Some of us are no doubt better than others. Some of us are hoarders, some of us are ruthless and some of us sit right bang smack in the middle. For me I sit in the middle, but today was about being ruthless.
My biggest fear when doing a clean out is that I’ll get rid of something that I’ll need down the track. Whether it’s a size thing, a colour thing, a trend thing, an anything, it’s a fear that if I throw that out I might regret it later. To overcome this (given my past lack of success) I devised a strategy of four piles, it went like this:
1) To keep – all time useful fav’s.
2) One month trial – one month to wear and care or it’s out without any doubts.
3) Markets – to sell at either the markets, online or give to a charity shop
4) Throw out – not even the charity shop would want.
From there it was a matter of adding the clothes. I took everything, as in EVERYTHING I had in my drawers and my cupboard and emptied them into the living room. Why? I figured if I got them out of my bedroom it was easier to be ruthless. The work in progress then went like this:
So now my ‘keep’ pile is in my drawers, the ‘one month trial’ is in my wardrobe, the ‘markets’ pile is bagged and ready to go and the ‘throw out’ pile is in the bin.
For the one month trial the rules are that I must wear these items within the month. If I wear them and like them, they go to the drawers. If I wear them and don’t like them, they go to the markets bag. If I then get to the end of the month and haven’t worn them, they immediately get added to the markets bag. Zip, zilch, nadda, no questions can be asked. One word, ruthless.
Keen to join?? What have you got in your wardrobe that you think you need but actually never use? Join our event here, or leave a comment below, the one month trial ends Sunday 24th of Feb.
Here’s to being ruthless!

ok – I’m in too. Gulp – Now I have to face the clothes I spent a lot of money on but never wore =( I’m gonna do it!!
Maria I don’t know you personally but I definitely know what you are saying! Why do we do that to ourselves?
shitballs. I am freaking out cause I know there are things in my wardrobe I have not even looked at since leaving London for India in 2005!! OK. I’m in too, but I am with Belz, might make mine 2 months just to be on the safe side??
I know, I’m freaking out too but it’s so liberating at the same time! One month, two months, whatever works for you
